As a pensioner member of the Retirement Balance Plan (RBP) category of the Uniper Group of the Electricity Supply Pension Scheme (ESPS), you will get a pension for life, from the date you choose to start receiving your benefits.
The information below applies to members who have chosen to convert their retirement balance to pension through the RBP.
If you have chosen to buy your pension from an insurance company instead, your chosen insurance company will be responsible for paying your pension and answering any queries about your pension payments.
Your pension is paid in arrears, around day 24 of each month. This is done direct to your bank or building society account by the RBP administrator, Broadstone.
The bank account that your pension is paid into must be in your name, or you must be one of the joint holders named on the bank account.
It is important that you tell Broadstone if your bank or building society details change. You must do this at least two weeks before your pension is due to be paid, to ensure that you continue to receive your pension payments without any delays.
Find out how to update your payment details on the changing your details page.
Your pension is reviewed every year and increases annually, in line with the Retail Prices Index (RPI), up to a maximum of 2.5%. You can find out more and see this year's increase on the annual pension increase page.
Like many other forms of income, your annual pension may be subject to income tax. It will be taken into account along with other income you may receive, including the State Pension (see below).
Tax you owe may be taken from your pension before it reaches your bank account. Additional tax may also be due, depending on your other sources of income.
The amount of income tax you pay on your Uniper pension is based on a tax code provided by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). It is NOT set by the RBP administrator, Broadstone, or by the RBP. Broadstone receives updated tax code information for you direct from HMRC, which they must then apply to your pension.
If you have any questions about the tax code applied to your RBP pension, you should call the HMRC helpline on 0300 200 3300 or +44 135 535 9022 (outside the UK). You can also find out more about tax codes on the government website.
The amount of income tax you pay may be affected if you are still working or return to work while taking your pension. You can read more on the working after you take your pension page.
Income from your State Pension is taxable.
You receive your State Pension gross of tax, which means no tax is taken before your pension is paid to you. However, it does use up some of your tax-free Personal Allowance.
The standard Personal Allowance for the tax year is 2025/26 is £12,570. You can check your Personal Allowance on the government website.
You pay Income Tax when your total annual income goes above your Personal Allowance.
Your total annual income includes:
It excludes tax-free income, for example, from ISAs and Premium Bonds.
If you think your taxable income is getting close to your Personal Allowance, you may want to contact HMRC to determine the tax implications when you receive your State Pension and potentially avoid a tax bill at the end of the tax year.
If you need more information about your Personal Allowance and the tax you may need to pay, you will need to contact HMRC. You can find more information on the government website.

You get a P60 from your RBP administrator, Broadstone, every April (the end of the tax year).
It includes the following details:
You should download and keep your P60 for at least two years in case you need to complete a tax return.
You can find a copy of your P60 when you log in to your myESPS account or by contacting Broadstone.
If, for any reason, you feel unable to manage your own affairs, including your pension, you can make legal arrangements to pass the responsibility to a family member, solicitor or someone else close to you.
You, or your chosen representative, will then need to tell your RBP administrator, Broadstone. You can find contact information for Broadstone on the contact details page.
